Something different this month: Jackie Gibb one of our Leadburn supporters has just exhibited a thought provoking installation at Edinburgh College of Art featuring Leadburn birch branches engraved with hearts, inspired by the old brick WW2 building and its graffiti.

‘With Love…’,  by Jackie Gibb, photos by Jackie and Thomas Allcock

Jackie describes the work:  “Rural and urban graffiti can differ in quality but seldom in passion.  Why are colourful sprayed images on buildings considered more antisocial than carving a heart into a tree?  Do we forgive destruction if it is done for love? Presenting someone with a bunch of flowers could be described as a socially acceptable destructive act, and with this in mind, the birch trees are arranged in a bunch. They are bound by sackcloth, sitting in ash, prompting us to consider our role in passively accepting vandalism of nature. Randomly dispersed through the young trees are carefully carved hearts. Subtle, forgiven signs of vandalism.”

Also, although taken in October, I can’t resist including this photograph by Peter Stevenson of a rather muddy Common Hawker dragonfly just rescued from the bog.
