Friends of Leadburn Community Woodland has organised volunteering sessions at the woodland since the community woodland was founded in 2007. These sessions continue on the last Sunday morning of each month, but have expanded in recent years to also include weekly Monday and Tuesday morning sessions at Leadburn Wood and other nearby sites with environmentally sympathetic landowners. We also host volunteering groups from other charities (e.g. Lothian Conservation Volunteers, Borders Forest Trust, Green Team) and corporate groups.

We have a brilliant and varied set of volunteers who provided over 1200 volunteer hours from 54 individuals over 71 sessions at Leadburn Wood in 2022, and almost as many again at our neighbouring sites. Anyone is welcome to join. Tools, help and advice are provided, and often home baking or chocolate biscuits when we take a break. Most sessions run from 10am to 1pm, though you can arrive later or leave earlier if you want. Contact leadburncw@hotmail.com if you would like to get involved, and we can add you to our volunteer emailings.
Currently we run volunteering sessions as follows:
Last Sunday morning of every month usually at Leadburn Wood. Typical jobs include planting and maintenance of recently planted trees, managing re-growth of self-sown conifers, and looking after our path network.
First Sunday morning of every month usually at Whim Wood, about two miles from Leadburn. Since 2023 we have been removing a large area of invasive rhododendrons at Whim to allow recovery of a beautiful area of birch and pine bog woodland designates as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its moss and fungi communities.
Every Monday morning usually at Leadburn Wood, as above.
Every Tuesday morning usually at Whim Wood, as above.
Corporate Volunteering
We have successfully hosted several corporate groups of up to 25 people in recent years. Contact us at leadburncw@hotmail.com to discuss dates, times and tasks that might be suitable for your company.
