Whim wood is located about two miles from Leadburn.
Since 2023 we have been removing a large area of invasive rhododendrons at Whim to allow recovery of a beautiful area of birch and pine bog woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its moss and fungi communities.

The work to clear the wood involves pruning the rhododendron into stumps. The stumps are left with enough leverage to subsequently remove the entire root system. Roots are removed either with a mattock or occasionally a hand winch is needed for the largest stumps. If roots are left in situ, the rhododendron will readily regrow.
Brash is left in discrete piles that provide wildlife habitat and will decompose naturally.

Huge progress has been made and the woodland is gradually returning a healthy state.
